Stockbroker-Turned-Therapist Offers Insights Into Money Worries

San Diego Business Journal - November 4, 2002

Tom Manheim
Too many people spend too much time worrying about money and have no idea why, says Tom Manheim, who calls himself a "money therapist."

"If you understand your beliefs about money, based on your upbringing and the culture, then you can develop new attitudes and stress less over money," Manheim said.

A stockbroker for 18 years, Manheim had a satori of sorts when his son was nearly killed in accident, and he realized he didn't really want to continue in the career.

He became a licensed family therapist and quickly saw that a recurring theme surrounding the breakup of many marriages revolved around money.

The key problem is that most people don't put a lot of thought into figuring out how much money they need today and after they retire, he said.

Combining his new skills as a therapist with his past knowledge of financing, Manheim launched an educational program he calls Money and Soul.

"My goal is to give people more clarity and balance in a culture of materialism and greed, plus greater power and freedom with their money, while nurturing their souls." Money worries are becoming more apparent as the stock market continues its two-year slide, and many investors are simply ignoring their quarterly account statements.

While it may be painful, Manheim advises that sticking their heads in the sand isn't a mature approach.

Manheim, 45, offers Money and Soul as a six-week course at his Solana Beach office for $175, but also conducts a streamlined, one-day class at UCSD Extension once a quarter for $95.
